Sizzling Summer Reads with my Sis

This time of year every podcast, magazine and media outlet is reccomending summer reading. It made sense to team up with my sister Lavinia, an editor at Faber publishing house, to discuss what is hot off the press and would be perfect as a sizzling summer read.

60 years after it was first published, two editions have been released of this iconic collection of poetry which established Sylvia Plath as one of the most gifted poets of the 20th century.
2 versions are available. The Heritage hard back edition which recreates the original design and type setting and a ‘shove in in your suitcase’ paperback edition.
Suggested wine pairing:
Sylvia was apparently a huge fan of sherry and it crops up in letters and her journals. With its depth, layered aroma and balance of sweetness and acidity, this contemplative drink mirrors Plath’s poetry perfectly. Especially richer styles styles like Oloroso or Amontillado.

On The Calculation of Volume. Book 1. by Solvej Balle
Translated by Barbara Haveland
August is Women in Translation Month and this book was shortlisted for the 2025 International Booker Prize. It’s also an example of very ambitious publishing – as it is a seven novel series! If you read it – you will see why publishers agreed to this.
It’s based on a simple concept of a woman who slips out of time – very much groundhog day vibes. And yet, this book combines a haunting style and hypnotic skill whilst being a real page turner.
Suggested Drinks pairing:
One could enjoy reading this while sippling a Sweet Vermouth on the Rocks with a Twist, paying homage to Bill Murray in the film, Groundhog Day.

A Barrister for the Earth by Monica Feria-Tinta
For a non-fiction option, this book is written by a top climate barrister and she advocates for people as well as for endangered animals and nature. Here she shares 10 of her landmark legal battles which give hope to the planet! It should be of relevance for anyone who cares about the environment, which if you drink wine, that does include you!
Suggested wine pairing:
Anything which is made sustainably or using eco-friendlhy practices. You could drink something which is certified Organic, Biodynamic or “Sustainable” on the label. You can also be mindful of drinking local produce – whether you are abroad or staycationing. There are plenty of delcious English wines available for the latter!
